16? I wish I could average 16!

I do mostly city driving these days. I'm lucky to get 12.5MPG average on my tank.

Straight six YJ Wrangler. If you're careful you can get 15-16 but it makes such a great noise that it's hard not to floor it everywhere you go.

I thought it said '98.9mpg' and thought. Nice he's bought a Skoda Rapid Greenline, but 9.89mpg. Thats about what we got out of a Dodge Royal Monaco back in the early eighties.

My wallet would be going into cardiac arrest at that rate.

I normally drive quite spiritedly , but once I wanted to try a hypermiling experiment. I drove an entire tank shifting at 2k or below, always careful not to stomp on the gas or unnecessarily bleed off kinetic energy with too much braking. The result was 29 mpg compared to my normal 26.5, about 8-1/2% improvement.

I haven't tried it since.

According to the car, I'm averaging 27-28. That's improved from the 25 it read earlier in the week with just a slight change in my driving tendencies. The EPA rates it at 28/41, but I suppose that's if you don't want to hear the 1.4L sing.

I miss my S600 Mercedes. It's very easy to get a single digit mpg.

I remember me and my friend have a fuel economy race to find who got the worst mpg. And he won by 5.2mpg :D

Sweet baby jeebus. I drive a similar V6 with similar horsies. The difference is my commute is 95% freeway. Only two stop lights

Wow. Seeing these brings back memories. My dad blew up the 4.2L in his Wrangler and swapped this into it. 350 bored .030 over, aluminium rods, composite intake, performer heads, etc. Before the heads/intake swap he was shuffling from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds with 31" all terrain tires. It's fucking ridiculous.

95% freeway is soooo good for MPGs.

What car is it and what MPG do you average?

Kinja'd!!!1

I've got a 370z nismo. And I average 16-18 since I like to give it the welly here and there. Sometimes if I am nice I've gotten 20, but that is the most.

Kinja'd!!! davedave1111 > With-a-G is back to not having anything written after his username

Economical driving is harder than you think - there's things that are generally good to do, and then there's knowing enough about your car (and route, ideally) to know what the most economical thing is to do in any given situation.

Still, you can't do that much unless you normally drive like you stole it. I'd guess you'd do well to push your car about about 33-35 even with the most economical driving possible.

This week I've done about 60 miles, give or take. Something like 8 or 9 US gallons of petrol.

Half the distance was urban driving without too much traffic, but lots of speed-humps; the other half was solid jams.

It's a 1991 BMW 318, and it's performed flawlessly. Clearly not the tool for the job, though. At UK prices, that's 50 bucks in fuel.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Lekker
03/07/2014 at 16:46

Kinja'd!!!0

I can get 16-18 if I'm doing a lot of freeway driving and not driving the car too hard. On long road trips when cruising I can get about 20.

But surface street driving is the worst, especially if I step on it too much from complete stops. Even if I'm taking it easy the stop and go is really bad for MPGs.

The most fuel efficient fast cars will be the future models with the hybrid turbo setup that will trickle down from F1.

Kinja'd!!! Lekker > Manuél Ferrari
03/07/2014 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!1

Oh I don't doubt it. Some really impressive technology is coming out of F1 this year.

boy does that happen downtown. My favorite way to give it some go is when doing a turn from a perpendicular street. I usually do 1st up to idk, say 4k and get on 2nd and really give it some gas. Bring the back-end a little loose, and watch as I laugh and smile like a bit of an idiot. On my way to the store there is one turn (its a 2 lane street on the right and turns into a 4 lane on the left) and it leads to nothing on one side and a small street on the other, so its perfect to have a bit of fun.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Lekker

It's so fun to do that, even just a tiny bit. You don't need dangerous amounts of oversteer to have fun. In my car I can just turn off traction control and induce oversteer by sneezing on the throttle. It gets very unsettled with TC off cause it's such a powerful porker, haha.

What does the 370z Nismo weigh? It must be so light compared to my car.

Kinja'd!!! Lekker > Manuél Ferrari
03/07/2014 at 16:56

Kinja'd!!!1

Thats basically what I do. I don't even turn off the TC sometimes and it lets me slip a little and snaps me right back, just enough to get some adrenaline pumping. With the TC off its very fun .

It weights about 3300 from what I understand, with a full tank of gas and one passenger. Which is a few more pounds than the Base model, but it has more power to back that up. The difference is nil to none, but I like the aggressive look of it better. It puts 350hp down so its not bad. I plan on doing HFC's, Titanium exhaust, lightweight battery, and racing seats eventually. Along with some smaller rubber and sticky set like RE-11s, it should fly.

03/07/2014 at 17:03

Wikipedia says:

Saloon: 1,605 kg (3,538 lb)

But that's probably with no sunroof and no options. I got my car used so I couldn't order it with no sunroof or the carbon fiber roof. And it has leather and iDrive and other options. So I'm guessing the actual curb weight is over 3700 lbs

On the track for a HPDE, I got my GTO to drink 10.003 gallons of premium over 77.21 miles. That was 7.72mpg with a 5.7L V8.

I was slightly more impressed when two years earlier, I got my (stock) 2.0L I4 to do 9,5mpg on the track. That was a 205hp supercharged 2.0L, but still a 4 banger in the single digits.

Track days are wonderful, haha. And on the front stretch of BIR, that car was doing mid-130's. Here's a bit from the introduction of BIR of Trackpedia:

Brainerd is a high speed track based in Brainerd, Minnesota. The track has ten corners and includes the fastest two corners on any track in the USA, turns 1 and 2.

I was only ever in 3rd and 4th gear. And coming into turn 1 is quite an experience for a newbie. I would slow down from 130+ to something like 110, and by the end of the turn find that I had creeped back up to 120...
